Metta Prayer:
May all beings be happy
May all beings be free from pain
May all beings have peace of mind
May all beings have ease of well being.
Why practice yoga? Why is yoga so popular?
The practices found in almost every gym and in every
town are hatha yoga: a sequence of postures designed
to open & balance the joints, lengthen and enliven
muscle & connective tissue,  strengthen bone and calm
the nervous system.  Paired with specific breathing
techniques and some meditation it has a subtle yet
powerful effect on the body and mind.  In short, it feels
good.  And when the body feels good, the mind is more
at ease, and life just seems better.
There are many types of hatha yoga-you should explore
lots; find the one that best matches you.

Why do we find buddhist prayers, chants and paradigms mixed
in with yoga?

Yogic techniques were practiced long before the Buddha and his
teachings came to be.  Buddhism originated in India, the motherland of
yoga. The man who became the Buddha, in fact, practiced yogic
techniques before  embodying his own realizations, or, his own path of
self realization.    There are three main types of Buddhism we in the west
are familiar with, and many more types in the  lands in which it originated
and proliferated.
As westerners we are attracted to both the yogic and Buddhist paths,
and some of our most influential and popular current day teachers
incorporated both into their own practices. Both paths have very
important lessons for us to learn. I don't think it matters which path we
follow, they will lead us to the same place; a peaceful mind and
compassionate heart while we are here on earth.
